How do we handle concrete recycling in Maryland?
When concrete is recycled, it can be moved into the area where concrete waste is collected or deposited. The accumulated debris is then removed and placed in an impactor whose impactors break down concrete into small pieces called recycled concrete aggregate (RCA).
In the case of RCA-sized pieces, the concrete recycler may be placed at the bottom of the recycling plant to produce smaller pieces of concrete aggregate. The recycler can also be used to remove fines and other materials that are not wanted in the concrete mixture.

What is recycled concrete aggregate (RCA)?
Recycled concrete aggregate is a very desirable material for construction companies and provides an affordable material for a variety of uses.
The cost per tonne for RCA can be much lower than that of the standard RCA stone but still provides excellent performance and reliability. This has an environmental aspect too. When virgin aggregate is used, this implies that the natural resources have to be extracted and processed. In contrast, using recycled concrete aggregate helps conserve these resources.
Uses of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA)
As with most materials, recycled concrete is typically used as it was when it was created. RCA has several uses including pipe bedding, underlayment for roads and driveways, base course for parking lots, and more.
